began my coaching career at Brightwells Tennis Club, based in Farnham. I gained my PTR at the age of 17 as well as my Tennis Assistants qualification. After completing college at 17, I opted to play full-time tennis with the PTR academy in London.
After two years I found that it was time to move on and I went down the coaching route yet again. I picked up coaching again at Brightwells for another year, with Catherine joining me 6 months later. During this time I went on to achieve my DCA.
Shortly after this Catherine and I moved to Ramsbury for a new coaching opportunity. We have been at Ramsbury Tennis Club since 2006. I thoroughly enjoy my coaching and work with all kids as well as adults of various standards and levels. In February 2010 I went on to gain my SPC Award. With our work we have close links with the County and I have managed the U18 boy’s, U18 girls, U14 boys at their respective County Cup events as well as the U12’s. I have also produced county players and some have gone on to be national players. I am also a qualified CTS Tutor (tutoring coaches).
As a player, I didn’t start tennis until I was 14. As a junior, whilst part of the PTR Academy I played lots of tournaments around the country including British Tours and Open Tournaments. I was selected to become a part of the National Great Britain Deaf Tennis Squad at the age 16. My first tournament abroad was in Austria 2003 at the Dresse + Maere Cup (Deaf tennis version of the Davis Cup) and we were the finalists – a great result for my first international event.
At the National events, I have been a finalist and a semi-finalist 5 times in the Singles over a period of 6 years; and won the event in 2012 and 2015. I also have 6 Men’s and 4 Mixed Doubles titles, 3 of them with Catherine.
My career highlights are winning the Silver Medal in both the Mens and Mixed Doubles, narrowly missing out on the Gold both times, at the World Deaf Tennis Championships in Antalya, Turkey 2019. Also the Silver Medal at the World Deaf Team Cup 2018, again in Antalya. Other highlights include Bronze in the Mens doubles at the Europeans in Slovenia 2016. Prior to that knocking out the number 2 seed in my first Deaflympics in Taipei, Taiwan (2009), plus reaching bronze play off in the mens doubles, representing my country for numerous years, most recently at the Dresse & Maere Cup in Tennessee 2014 and the 2013 Deaflympics in Bulgaria – Catherine and I came 4th in the mixed after winning the National Championships together this same year. A special highlight in my career has to be winning the National Championships in singles for the first time in 2012 (and doubles) after being a finalist several times. Catherine and I won the Bronze at the Europeans in this same year.
Lewis and I have been at Ramsbury Tennis Club since September 2006 which is our main base with associations at Bedwyn and local schools where we run programmes and courses for all those interested. I am now fully involved in Deaf Tennis as the Great Britain National Coach and I absolutely love it and have such a passion for it!
